Air and Space the Girl Scout way

Saturday we went to Udvar Hazey with the Brownie troop I co-lead. We have 13 girls, one of which is Sarah. They were not all able to go, but we did end up with 10 for the day. We had a lot of fun. The Girl Scouts set up lots of different booths throughout the museum. We put tie dye bandannas on them so we could keep track of them during the event. There were tons of people there. The kids had a great time going from booth to booth, collecting the items they were giving. We have quite a few posters, stickers, books etc of the sun, NASA, we even have a picture of the 2007 Astronauts. Very interesting. The girls made a mini moonrover, that took a lot of time. They loved it though. Alan and Drew came along for the day. Drew just wanted to see the planes. So he and his Dad left the girls and spent some father and son time exploring the many planes.
For the adult entertainment we got to talk about the controversial items at the museum, such as the picture of Lisa Marie Nowak on the poster of the female astronauts. Now they decided to picture her because she was an astronaut. Sadly, I think most of the adults had other vivid memories of her.
Here is a picture of the Enola Gay. This is also a big political debate. There were a lot of protesters out when this was brought into the museum. Had to put a picture of that in.
The most fun I had was talking with two W.A.S.P. that were there. They were the Women Airforce Service Pilots, WASP, the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft. The girls did not understand this all that well, but the leaders did. I could have talked with them for hours. Both of these women started flying in 1939. They were 19yrs old and both of their mothers would have nothing to do with them after they decided to go. They did not see them off or anything. They had some great stories. It was an eventful day for the little Brownie Troop.
